2016#20 - The chevron striped dress (McCalls 7121 view C - sort of) - Como fazer um vestido que emagrece

EN Summary: The Portuguese title to this post translates into "How to make a slimming dress" and that's a good title for the Chevron Striped Dress. Keep reading for the complete sewing review.

EN: The knit used on this second version of McCalls7121 (click here for the first version, the Margaritas Dress); the knit used has stripes running vertically instead of horizontally; to make things even more challenging, the stripe pattern has a horizontal nap, so matching up stripes on the bias took more fabric that I had anticipated for view B; I was forced to cut view C (the midi length) to make it work with the fabric I had. For perfect matching I cut each pattern peace once (on a single layer layout, right side of the fabric facing up), using the blue dominant stripe as a guide to place the pattern pieces. After all pieces have been cut out, I used them with the pattern still pinned to cut their symmetrical. I placed them with the wrong side of the knit facing up, pattern sandwiched in between, on top of the knit, making sure all stripes were the same and aligned. Re-pinned everything and cut again the second layer. It worked like a charm.

EN: I lined the dress with special purpose knit lining as explained in this tutorial, but this time I didn't forget to fuse the bias tape reinforcements on the armholes and neckline :). The next photo shows the armhole with the lining attached, right sides facing:
---
EN: After turning the bodice to the right side and hand-basting all the edges I could see that the stripes aligned perfectly along the center seams and there was a perfect symmetry very pleasant to the eye:
---
EN: I was dying to try out my new Coverstitch machine (click here) and I dare say it behaved quite well! The next photo shows the armhole after being coverstitched (it's not a bikini but it sure looks like one in this photo!).
---
EN: Then I stitched the skirt and attached it to the bodice (the waist seam incorporates an elastic casing). The dress was looking like this before hemming:
---
EN: The side seams and the shoulder seams don't match up so perfectly; it would be impossible with the differences between the front and back pattern. I liked out it turned out but I thought it was looking a little too "grown-up". I also hate to waste fabric so I decided to use the remnants to sew a hem band with horizontal stripes (turning the dress into a maxi-dress) as seen on the first photo.
---
EN: For the band I used the cut-out skirt pattern remnant from view C and placed it so the stripes aligned horizontally on all vertical seams. Then I stitched it to the dress, pressed the seam allowances up and coverstitched; I also trimmed down the allowances close to the coverstitching.
---
EN: The hem was made exactly as on the Margaritas Dress, but this time I used the coverstitch instead of the twin needle. Notice that the hem is round, so the stripes don't run parallel to it:
---
CONCLUSION: I think this dress turned out very well and it's very flattering on the silhouette, slimming down the waist :). I also enjoyed using my new coverstitch because there are real advantages when compared with the twin needle method; for starters, using the twin needle implies re-threading the machine, and at least loosening the tension on the machine's bobbin case to avoid the tunneling effect caused by the bobbin thread being too tight. Another advantage of the coverstitch/chainstitch is how easy it it to remove the stitches in case a mistake has been made.

As usual I will post photos of me wearing the dress over at Tany et La Mode; I will let you guys now when the post is up. photos of me wearing the dress are published on Tany et La Mode (click here).

Thank you all for dropping by and for the lovely comments, they are highly appreciated!

Love the way you have used the stripes, it is an incredibly flattering effect. Perfect job on matching all those stripes too, not that I'd expect anything less from you!

Love the way this looks! The horizontal band at the bottom really looks sharp, as if it was meant to be there all along! Can I ask why you lined it? As always brilliant, detailed work! Thank you for your blog I have learned a lot & always enjoy reading it!

Hi Rosalind, thank you so much for your lovely comment! Regarding your question, I do prefer to line jersey dresses when they are close fitting; this dress has a close fitting bodice so I lined it to keep the jersey fabric from "sticking" to my body (if that makes sense in English!). I didn't bother with the skirt, otherwise it would become too heavy on the elasticized waist. I also like the finished edges of a lined garment better, being it made from knit or woven fabric.
Kind regards,
Tany
