Mondrian Dress: Notes on the finishing details - Notas sobre os acabamentos

EN Summary: The dress is almost finished but sometimes the finishing details are really time-consuming. This article will cover the back zipper, the hem band, the lining and the facings. The techniques chosen will deliver a dress which will look like the original, although being made quite differently (it's adapted to a contemporary body shape and way of dressing). Keep reading to know more!

EN: The original dress has a lapped zipper cleverly concealed behind the center back vertical band. I've considered using the same method, but ended up opting for an invisible zipper located at one of the vertical band's seams because in my opinion it enhances the dress eliminating some of the bulk on the back. The black zipper becomes virtually invisible in the seam and you won't even know it's there; it will also make the lining application much easier than the lapped zipper (the original dress wasn't lined but mine will be):
---
EN: On the original dress, the hem band includes a hem allowance which is pressed up and stitched by hand as in a traditional hand-sewn hem; this allowance is narrower than the band itself. My hem band is cut twice as wide plus seam allowances so I can press the junction seams open, turn up the hem  and secure it by stitching in the ditch along the junction seams:
---

EN: Most couture dresses weren't lined back then, and this one is no exception. The lining wasn't really necessary because women would wear full undergarments and slips. The lack of the lining would also make any alteration subsequently made to the dress much easier, like taking in or letting out the seams for fitting purposes. Nowadays we really need a lining and I drafted one using the dress base pattern and shifting the center back seam so it overlaps with the band seam were the invisible zipper is applied. The lining length equals the dress length including the finished hem band (the lining will be hand-stitched to the edge of the hem allowance, forming a pleat for wearing ease). The lining covers all the inside of the dress and both armholes and neckline are stay-stitched together with the lining, before the facings are stitched in. As far as the facings are concerned, dress and lining are treated as one from now on.

EN: The facings are prepared and edge bound with 1" wide strips of bias cut lining, like you'd normally do on a hong kong seam finish (click here).
---
EN: The facings are sewn (SAs are graded and clipped), under-stitched and to keep them in place I also tacked them down to the lining alone. First I lightly pressed the edges of the armhole (I didn't want a crisp crease), then I pinned the facings in place to both dress and lining making sure they stay flat in place; I inserted my hand in between lining and dress, through the zipper opening on the lining and I was able to feel my prick-stitches so they only hit the lining and not the dress:
---
EN: Here's a finished armhole (there's still the other one and the neckline to finish). I obtained a solid thick edge, very similar to what I can observe on the original dress photos, and I'm very happy with it:
---
EN: After I'm finished with the armholes and neckline I still have to fell-stitch the lining along the hem and zipper tapes, so it will take some time until the dress is finally completed! Stay tuned for the final post!
---

This is looking really awesome! I actually really enjoy all those time consuming finishing details, especially if I can watch something on tv at the same time.

This is going to be an amazing dress. I saw an original a few years ago at an exhibition. Your's will be certainly as perfect.

Tany this is REALLY pretty! I purchased this pattern as soon as I saw you were making it! I have always been in love with this dress and had an internet search frenzy when I saw it on the Great British Sewing Bee! Can't wait to see the finished result! I just received my pattern and plan on making mine for the spring of next year!!!
